What Modern Research Is Beginning to Reveal
In recent years, Kambô has drawn increasing interest far beyond the Amazon rainforest, finding its way into healing spaces, wellness communities, and ceremonial circles across the world. While the practice remains deeply rooted in indigenous traditions, researchers have also begun exploring why people seek Kambô and what kinds of experiences they report afterwards.
One of the most comprehensive modern studies on Kambô was published in 2021 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, titled:
The study surveyed 386 participants from different countries who had experienced Kambô ceremonies, exploring:
motivations for using Kambô,
ceremony settings,
acute experiences,
and long-term psychological and lifestyle effects.
At Viva Kambo, we believe education and informed understanding are important parts of this work. This article explores some of the findings from the study while honouring the deeper ceremonial and personal dimensions of the Kambô experience.
What Is Kambô?
Kambô is the secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), traditionally used by indigenous tribes from the Amazon basin. Historically, it has been used in rituals associated with cleansing, strength, stamina, focus, and preparation before hunting.
The secretion is traditionally collected respectfully from the frog without harming it, and the frog is then released back into its natural environment.
During a ceremony, small superficial points are created on the skin and the Kambô is applied to those points. The effects usually come on quickly and may include:
heat,
sweating,
nausea,
swelling,
elevated heart rate,
emotional release,
and purging.
The physical process is often intense, but relatively short-lived.
Why Are People Drawn to Kambô?
One of the most interesting findings from the study was the diversity of motivations people reported for seeking Kambô.
The most common reasons included:
general healing,
detoxification,
emotional purification,
spiritual growth,
increased wellbeing,
mental clarity,
and connection to self or spirit.
The study also found that many participants were already engaged in practices such as meditation, yoga, breathwork, ritual work, or plant medicine ceremonies.
This suggests that many people are not approaching Kambô purely as a physical process, but as part of a broader personal or spiritual journey.
Reported Motivations and Benefits
The study included a graph showing the most commonly reported motivations and perceived benefits from Kambô.
Figure 2 — Subjectively reported benefits from Kambô (From Majić et al., Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2021)

Participants commonly reported perceived improvements in:
physical health,
emotional wellbeing,
mental clarity,
performance,
and spiritual awareness.
Preparation and Ceremony Matter
Another major theme in the study was the importance of preparation and setting.
Most participants reported preparing through:
fasting or dietary changes,
meditation,
intention setting,
spiritual practices,
or preparation conversations with facilitators.
The majority of ceremonies took place in intentional healing environments rather than casual settings. Many participants received Kambô in group ceremonies led by practitioners or facilitators.
This reflects something many experienced facilitators already understand deeply:
Kambô is not simply about the physical application itself. The environment, preparation, emotional safety, intention, and integration all shape the experience.
The Acute Experience
The study found that the most common immediate effects reported during ceremonies included:
vomiting,
heat,
nausea,
sweating,
swelling,
racing heart,
trembling,
and emotional intensity.
Most participants reported the acute process lasting between 15–60 minutes.
Interestingly, researchers also explored the emotional and spiritual dimensions of the experience.
Approximately 42% of participants reported a feeling that “the spirit of the frog” was somehow present or connected with them during the ceremony.
Others described experiences involving:
clarity,
peace,
emotional release,
insight,
sacredness,
and deep introspection.
The researchers noted that Kambô does not appear to produce psychedelic effects in the same way as substances like ayahuasca or psilocybin, but many participants still reported altered states of awareness and meaningful psychological experiences.
Long-Term Positive Effects
Perhaps the most powerful part of the study was what participants reported after the ceremonies.
Many people described long-term positive changes involving:
emotional wellbeing,
mental clarity,
inner peace,
authenticity,
confidence,
appreciation for life,
healthier behaviours,
and stronger relationships.

The graph highlights perceived improvements in:
physical health,
emotional health,
clarity,
wellbeing,
inner peace,
and meaning in life.
Many participants also reported reducing alcohol, processed foods, tobacco, recreational drugs, and other unhealthy habits following their experiences.
Changes in Wellbeing and Life Satisfaction
One of the strongest findings in the study was the reported impact on wellbeing.
The researchers found that:
87.31% of participants reported an increase in personal wellbeing or life satisfaction after their Kambô experiences.

For many participants, Kambô was not simply remembered as a difficult physical process, but as a deeply meaningful life experience.
Safety, Responsibility, and Respect
The study also acknowledged that Kambô is not risk-free.
A small number of participants reported difficult physical or psychological reactions, and some sought medical support afterwards.
This is why proper:
screening,
preparation,
hydration guidance,
integration,
and experienced facilitation
are extremely important.
Kambô is not suitable for everyone and should always be approached responsibly and with care.
At Viva Kambo, safety, integrity, grounded facilitation, and respectful preparation are central to the way we hold ceremony.
Ancient Practice, Modern Curiosity
Modern science is still only beginning to understand Kambô.
More research is needed, and many aspects of the experience remain difficult to measure through conventional scientific frameworks alone.
But what this study clearly reveals is that many people are turning toward Kambô not simply for physical cleansing, but for something much deeper:
reconnection,
clarity,
emotional release,
presence,
discipline,
and transformation.
For many, the journey becomes less about adding something new…and more about letting go of what no longer belongs.
A return to simplicity.A return to presence.A return to self.
